1,152,326. Mixing liquid streams. ONDERZOEKINGSINSTITUUT RESEARCH N.V. 13 April, 1966 [14 April, 1965], No. 16227/66. Heading B1C. [Also in Division Fl] In a method of mixing an abrasive additive with a viscous liquid, the additive is injected with a stream of the liquid and the mixture is pumped by a gear pump with which a second stream of the liquid is introduced in such a way that it flows from the shaft ends over the faces of the gears. In the arrangement shown the stream of viscous liquid 1 has a bypass 4, 9 in which are two gear pumps 5, 6, the addition being injected between them at 7 through a mechanical mixer 8; a further stream 12 of the viscous liquid is supplied to the pump 6 as by a third gear pump 13 in such a way that it flows from the shaft ends and over the gears (27, 28 Fig. 2 not shown) of the pump 6 to prevent wear thereof by the abrasive. The pump 6 further has helical grooves (29, 30) in the shafts which assist flow therealong of the second stream of viscous liquid, which is supplied through channels (31-36) to the ends of the shafts and the neighbourhood of the shaft seals. The viscous liquid may be a spinning solution of viscose or synthetic polymer and the additive a pigment e.g. a suspension of titanium dioxide.
