Abstract

1455663 Mixing liquids BASF AG 26 March 1974 [27 March 1973] 13255/74 Heading B1C In a process for mixing two liquids having a viscosity difference of at least two powers of 10 in terms of poise, a portion of the high viscosity liquid is. mixed with low-viscosity liquid in a dynamic mixer to form a premix having a viscosity less than two powers of 10 bellow that of the higher viscosity liquid, and the premix mixed with the remainder of the high viscosity material in a static mixer. Preferably the mixing of the premix in the dynamic mixer is carried out at a sheer rate of at least 0.1 sec<SP>-1</SP> to form a premix containing not more than 60% by weight of the low viscosity material, and the mixing in the static mixer is carried out at a sheer rate of not more than 10<SP>4</SP> sec<SP>-1</SP>. In an apparatus the high viscosity liquid 1 is branched off through a line 4 and metering pump 5 to a junction 6 where it is joined by low viscosity liquid metered by a pump 8. The premix so formed is mixed in a toothed disc mixer 12 and fed to the main high viscosity stream at 17, the total stream being subdivided into partial streams which are displaced and recombined in a static homogenizer 20. In modifications a second high viscosity material 3 .may be added to the branch line 4 of the first, and a third high viscosity liquid material 14 with or without solids content to the junction 6 or to the premix at 18; further low viscosity material may be added to the main stream of the mixture at 19 or through a line 10 to the static homogenizer 20. The invention may be used for mixing lubricants, expanding agents, stabilizers and plasticizers with molten polymers; examples relate to nylon 6 and the mixing of a paraffin oil with polystyrene.
