Abstract
1,151,974. Heat-treating steel strip edges. UNITED STATES STEEL CORP. Dec.4, 1967 [Dec.2, 1966], No.55115/67. Heading C7N. The edges of strip 24 obtained by slitting sheet steel 20 are heat-treated by applying current leads from a power supply 28 of frequency at least 10,000 c/s to points 30 adjacent opposing slit edges (32) emerging from the slitter 22 so that the heat-treating temperature is limited to the edge zones of the slit by passage of current along the slit edges and across the unslit vertex. For steel 0À001 - 0À007 inch thick, the current frequency is preferably selected e.g. 50, 000- 1, 000, 000 c/s to produce annealing temperatures of 950 - 1350‹F. to reduce the hardness of the edges to less than 60 Rockwell 30-T, suitable for forming the flanges of container bodies.
