Abstract

1,151,760. I.R. transmitting semi-conductor glass. BARR & STROUD Ltd. 30 Aug., 1967 [26 Oct., 1966], No. 48013/66. Heading C1M. [Also in Division C7] Semi-conductor glass is made by heating in H 2 under pressure a glass-forming mixture containing C. The glass contains As, Se, Ge, Te, or other semi-conducting material, and has improved I.R. transmittance. The H 2 may be formed by including a hydrogen-rich substance, e.g. paraffin wax, polyethylene, coronene, benzanthrone, hexaethylbenzene, ethyltrimethylsilane, or LiAlH 4 , in the mixture, evacuating the container, and sealing; the source of C may be this substance or, e.g. graphite. The pressure, e.g. 5 atmos. of the H 2 may be developed by introducing H 2 into a vessel partly filled with the mixture and then heating. The mixture may be, in atoms per cent: As, 30; Ge, 30; Se, 40. The quantity of C may be, e.g., 1% wt.
