Abstract

A web 1 of particles, e.g. wood chips mixed with a thermosetting binding agent is fed by a belt 21 between opposed plates A1, A2, B1, B2 &c. of a number of heated presses, the temperature applied to the webs at the first press A1, A2 is lower than at the press B1, B2 and the maximum pressure applied at the first press is higher than at the second. A cold press 10, 11 forms part of the press assembly which is carried by a framework 2-4 mounted by wheels 5 on rails 6, and reciprocated in the direction of web movement by an hydraulic cylinder 12. As the web moves along, the presses are actuated to heat and compress the web whilst moving along with it. At the completion of the pressing, the upper press plates are raised by hydraulic cylinders 9 and the framework is returned to its initial position and the cycle is repeated. The displacement of the unit is somewhat shorter than the length of an individual press so that the web is gradually compacted. The unit may include additional presses for cooling the treated web. A tensioned steel web 17 may extend between the belt and the lower press plates, and a tensioned web 23 may extend below the upper press plates; the web 23 may comprise an endless belt. Alternatively, the web may be advanced stepwise and the presses held stationary.
