Abstract

1,151,442. Laminate. AEROJET GENERAL CORP. 6 Feb., 1968, No. 52382/68. Heading B5N. A laminate 13 comprises a plurality of fibrous reinforcing layers, e.g. of glass fibre fabric laminated to one another, the layers being substantially parallel to the surface of the laminate and being embedded in a tough, cured resilient polymeric composition comprising a mixture of an epoxy resin, a melamine-formaldehyde resin, a urea-formaldehyde resin or a phenol-formaldehyde resin with an elastomer compatible thereof, e.g. a butadieneacrylonitrile copolymer or a polyurethane rubber, the said resilient polymeric composition bonding said plurality of fibrous reinforcing layers together in a unitary composite impervious structure which is highly resistant to delamination into its individual layers on being impacted by a high energy particle, said unitary composite structure being capable of undergoing temporary deformation upon the impact of the high energy particle, absorbing kinetic energy from the particle and returning to its original state. The impregnating medium may contain pigments, antioxidants, release agents, fire retardants, softeners and curing agents and may be applied in a solvent. The impregnated layers to form the laminate are laminated under heat and pressure prior to attachment of the tiles.
