Abstract

1,151,289. R.F. couplings. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 7 March, 1968 [10 April, 1967], No. 16352/67. Heading H4A. An R.F. heating apparatus for heating dielectric material comprises a non-resonant applicator A, Fig. 2, having input and output ends, in combination with circuit means for directing back at least part of the energy not absorbed by the dielectric material to the applicator input in phase. As described, an R.F. source M, Fig. 2, is connected to port 1 of a hybrid coupler HC and the input end of the applicator A is connected to port 2. Ports 3 and 4 are connected respectively to a terminating load L and, via a phase shifter P, to the output end of the applicator A. By suitably choosing the coupling factor of the hybrid HC, i.e., as substantially equal to the single pass loss of the applicator, and adjusting the phase shifter P, the signals from ports 1 and 4, respectively, outgoing at port 3 are made subtractive, and outgoing at port 2 are made additive. In another embodiment (Fig. 1, not shown), connections to the ports of the hybrid coupler differ from Fig. 2 in that those to the input end of the applicator and to the terminating load are interchanged.
