890,846. Pulsing radio frequencies. FERRANTI Ltd. June 30, 1960 [July 2, 1959], No. 22677/59. Class 40(5). [Also in Group XL(b)] Very short microwave pulses are produced by applying longer pulses, e.g. from a magnetron, to one of two waveguide or other transmission lines 1, 4 connected by a pair of 3db directional couplers 7, 8 so that normally all energy passes to a dummy load 15 terminating one line, then shortening in turn by control pulses the transmission time in each line by an odd number of half wavelengths so that energy is diverted to an antenna or other load connected to the other line for the short time interval between the leading edges of the control pulses, the later control pulse directing energy supply again to the dummy load. As shown the waveguides 1, 4 may each comprise two sections 1, 2 and 4, 5 each coupled by a 3db coupler 3, 6 and each terminated by reflecting short circuits 11, 12, 14, 16 such that energy is wholly directed into the second sections 2, 5. Further, the sections are both traversed at an odd number of quarter wavelengths from the short circuits by discharge tubes 18, 17 fired in turn by the control pulses to provide short circuits instead at the discharge tubes. The transmitted output pulse may be much shorter than the recovery time of the discharge tubes. In a modification a phase shifter is inserted in each of a pair of directionally coupled transmission lines and each in turn made to give a 180 degrees phase shift by control pulses.
