Abstract

1,151,222. Hypodermic syringes. S. M. WHITESMITH. 6 June, 1966 [4 June, 1965], No. 24021/65. Heading A5R. A hypodermic syringe cartridge has a sheathed needle pointed at both ends and fixed in a hub 30 which is slidable in a sleeve 12 fitted on the cartridge, the hub and sheath 44 being such that, as the cartridge is inserted in a syringe barrel, an annular flange of the syringe barrel engages the hub so that it slides and is locked into a position in which the needle pierces a seal 20 of the cartridge but does not engage the needle sheath, which may subsequently be removed as desired. The cartridge 10 of glass or plastics is closed at one end by a seal 20 which is secured with a bush 12 to the cartridge by an apertured metal cap 16. The needle is fixed in a hub 30 which has a shoulder 40 and which is gripped by the bush to hold the needle spaced from the seal. For use, the needle hub is pushed towards the seal so that the needle pierces the seal and is locked by engagement between the shoulder 40 and an annular recess 38 in the bush bore 36. The hub may have two shoulders (Figures 3 to 5, not shown) each engageable with a correspondingly shaped recess in the bush bore for holding the needle in positions in which it is spaced from and pierces the seal, respectively. The needle may be secured to a hub made of polyethylene or polypropylene by cement or to a hub of steel or aluminium by solder. Alternatively, the hub may be moulded around the needle or made in two parts secured around the needle by welding or cement. The seal may be made of ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer film in one piece with the bush. The needle sheath is made of polythene, polystyrene, polypropylene or nylon.
