A graphite anode comprises a graphite anode plate 1, a graphite anode rod 2 having an axial bore throughout its length which is screwed into a conical borehole in the anode plate and a metal conductor 3 which is fixed by soldering in the bore of the graphite rod and which is provided with an enlarged end 4 in the borehole of the graphite plate 1 with the outer side surface thereof flush with the thread on the graphite rod. The anode structure may be formed by screwing the rod 2 into the anode plate 1, introducing molten metal 4 into the bore and placing a metal pin 3 therein, or the anode rod structure may be formed prior to insertion into the anode plate, using a mold having a borehole of smaller depth than that of the anode plate. The graphite rod may be impregnated with wax.
