Abstract

1,150,425. Polyurethane foams. JOHNSON & JOHNSON. 31 May, 1966 [2 June, 1965], No. 24315/66. Headings C3C and C3R. Polyurethane foam is prepared by mixing together: (I) a hydroxyl polymer which is an aliphatic polyester or polyether having primary and/or secondary hydroxyl groups and having an OH number from 37 to 112 and a M.W. > 1000; (II) a diisocyanate in which the OH groups are attached to saturated carbon atoms; (III) a polyfunctional hydroxyl compound having at least 3 hydroxyl groups of which at least two are primary and having M.W. not > 350; (IV) water; and (V) an organometallic catalyst which may be a compound of Sn, Zn, Cd, Fe or Cu if I is a polyester and of Fe or Sn if I is a polyether. III is present at 1À5 to 7À5 parts per 100 parts by weight of I, and II is present in an amount sufficient to react with I and IV. V is present at 0À5 to 3 parts per 100 parts by wt. of I. Mixing is completed prior to any substantial reaction between I and the isocyanate (II). II is preferably a cycloaliphatic compound, e.g. bis-(4-isocyanatocyclohexyl)- methane, 1,3 - diisocyanato - cyclobutane, 2,2,4,4 - tetramethyl - 1,3 - diisocyanato - cyclobutane, or bis-(2-isocyanoethyl)-4-cyclohexene- 1,2-dicarboxylate. I is preferably a linear polyester with terminal OH groups having an acid No. < 10. Preferred polyethers have M.W. <3000 and may be used in conjunction with a foam stabilizer, e.g. a dimethylsiloxane block copolymer. III may be glycerol, butanetriol or triethanolamine. The light stable polymers of the invention may have substantially all the N present in the form of groups :NRN: in which R is an organic moiety having M.W. < 200 and having terminal saturated carbons directly attached to nitrogen, e.g. a xylylene, dicyclohexylmethane, an acyclic organic group or an unsaturated organic group, e.g. a substituted diethyl fumarate moiety.
