Abstract

1,149,997. Cathode ray storage tubes. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 29 March, 1968 [27 April, 1967], No. 15124/68. Heading H1D. A target structure for a secondary electron conduction storage system comprises a mesh 34 of electrically conducting material totally embedded within a porous layer 38 of a material exhibiting secondary electron conduction. The mesh may be of copper or nickel having 200- 400 openings/cm. and an open area of 50% or more. Suitable secondary electron conduction materials are potassium chloride, barium fluoride, sodium bromide and magnesium oxide, and the porous layer produced by evaporation in an inert atmosphere of helium or argon at a pressure of 1-5 torr. The mesh thickness is 12 microns, and the porous layer on each side of the layer 4-20 microns. The target may be used in a vidreon type pick-up tube or a writing and reading electron beam may be used. The target is supported by ring structures 32, 36 held within the tube by radially extending pins sealed to the glass wall. The pick-up tube may be sensitive to visible light, or a radiation converter in which input radiation is converted to a light output may be used.
