Abstract

1,149,558. Cauterising and suction devices. R. R. JACKSON. 13 Dec., 1966 [20 Dec., 1965], No. 55666/66. Heading A5R. A cautery or cutting electrode comprises a handpiece 16 having a metal tissue-contacting tip 22 connected to a power supply (12) which is controlled by a pressure-responsive switch (32) located remote from the handpiece and actuated through a fluid control line (30) by fluid pressure means secured to the handpiece 16. The metal tip 22, which is hollow for applying suction, is connected through a nozzle 18 on the handpiece to a vacuum source and, through a connector 24 on the handpiece and a power line (14), to the power supply (12). The vacuum becomes operative at the tip 22 when an opening 21 in the handpiece is closed by the operator's thumb. A tube 28 having a port 29 is connected between the fluid control line (30) and a bleed tube 26 communicating with the nozzle 18 so that when the opening 29 is closed by the operator's finger, pressure in the control line is reduced to actuate the switch for energising the tip 22. Alternatively the cautery may be in the form of forceps (37, Figure 3) or a pencil (50, Figure 4) to which a squeeze bulb which is connected to the control line, is secured. Pressure on the squeeze bulb increases the pressure in the control line to actuate the switch. The squeeze bulb may comprise a resilient annular wall (70, Figure 6) sealed at its edges around the handpiece. The squeeze bulb may be connected to two power supply control switches (32b, 32c) which are responsive to different pressures applied to the squeeze bulb for supplying the cautery with energy for cauterising or for cutting, respectively. Alternatively, two squeeze bulbs or a squeeze bulb divided into two chambers may be provided.
