Abstract

1,149,067. Discharge tubes; magnetic switches; thermal switches. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 11 Aug., 1966 [14 Aug., 1965], No. 36002/66. Headings H1D and H1N. In a method of manufacturing an enclosed electrical device 1, e.g. a diode, a glow discharge tube or lamp, or a relay with magnetizable or bi-metallic electrodes, in which two electrodes 2, 3, Fig. 1, are arranged to be secured to an inside wall of the device such that their adjacent free ends are spaced by an electrode gap of less than 1 mm., an aperture is provided in the wall adjacent the gap and a pin 9 of thickness equal to the desired electrode gap is inserted to space the electrodes which are then secured to the wall, the pin subsequently being withdrawn and the aperture sealed. The aperture may form part of the exhaust tubulation 8. Pin 9 may be inserted and the electrodes moved to abut either side of it, or, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), the electrodes, initially touching, may be pushed apart when the pin is inserted. Fig. 2 shows a relay contact unit with bi-metallic electrodes 11, 12 secured to rigid supply wires 13, 14 which are sealed to beads 15, 16. With pin 7 disposed between the electrodes, beads 15, 16 are sealed to envelope 10, pin 7 is withdrawn and the envelope exhausted and sealed.
