Abstract

1,148,645. Sterile packaging. TETRA PAK A.B. 13 Feb., 1967 [7 March, 1966], No. 6818/67. Heading B8C. Sterile liquids are packaged in a pre-formed container 2 introduced into a sterilizing chamber 16, the chamber then being sealed, a sterilizing agent in gas or vapour form being passed into and through the chamber 16 so as to sterilize its entire interior, a sterile liquid being introduced into the container 2 by a nozzle 10, and the container 2 being closed germ-tight and then removed from the chamber. As described, the chamber bottom 3 is reciprocable vertically to remove or insert containers 2, in its upper position effecting a germ-tight closure against a seal 5. The sterilizing agent, which may be, e.g. steam or ethylene oxide, is introduced through a duct 7 and passes out through a duct 12. To remove excess sterilizing agent the chamber may be partially evacuated through a duct 11. The liquid fill, e.g. pre-sterilized milk, is introduced through a retractable nozzle 10 whose lower end is kept below the liquid surface, Fig. 3 (not shown). Reciprocable pressure blocks 14 then effect a germ-proof seal and finally the platform 3 is lowered to remove the filled container. Heat sealing jaws (15) outside the chamber 16, Fig. 5 (not shown), then make a permanent seal. The container 2 may be of the'plasticscoated type whose mouth is closable concertinafashion.
