Abstract

Heading H4D A radar system of the pulse compression type comprises a modulating and a demodulating filter inserted into the transmission stages and the receiver stages respectively, the filters being characterized in that their group propagation time versusfrequency characteristic curves are parabolas of identical aperture but opposite concavity. The curves are preferably symmetrical about a central frequency which may be the same for each filter. In the system shown in Fig. 3 short pulses from unit 3 are converted to long pulses by the parabolic filter 1 and amplified and possibly altered in frequency in unit 4 before being transmitted. Received pulses are amplified and possibly altered in frequency in unit 7, and converted to short pulses by the parabolic filter 2. If the received signals have undergone a frequency change due to Doppler effect the output of filter 2 contains a residual frequency modulation which is eliminated by a bank of filters 8 which have propagation time versus frequency characteristics that are roughly linear. The bank of filters 8 may comprise two chains of identical cells having propagation times that vary linearly with frequency, the slope of the linear variation being positive for one chain and negative for the other, Fig. 4 (not shown). A plurality of taps are provided in each chain and means are provided for continuously selecting the tap providing the strongest signal. A set of additional delay lines may be inserted in the bank of filters or between the taps and the display equipment to render the overall delay in the circuitry independent of the Doppler shift. The use of the parabolic filters reduces the possibility of confusion between targets having different radial velocities.
