Abstract

1,147,834. Screw sockets. REPUBLIC INDUSTRIAL CORP. 23 March, 1967 [1 April, 1966], No. 13639/67. Heading F2H. A wire insert for application to an internal screw thread comprises a helically wound coil of wire, the wire having a diamond shaped cross-section. The wire is wound to form a cylinder of constant diameter and has straight portions 26-28. A tang 21 enables the insert to be gripped by a tool in order to place the insert in an internal screw thread, the tang then being broken off at a notch 23. The straight portions, the centres of which are spaced apart an angular distance of 180-270 degrees, create a locking effect when an externally threaded member is screwed into the insert. The ratio of the number of straight portions to the number of locking coils is in the range 1À2 to 2À6 and preferably lies in the range 2À0 to 2À5 where the number of locking coils is defined as the number of coils between the first and last straight portions.
