Abstract
1,147,811. Mounting glass lens in metal holders. M. C. SCHNEIDER, and H. J. SCHNEIDER, [trading as JOS. SCHNEIDER & CO. OPTISCHE WERKE]. 6 April, 1966 [15 April, 1965], No. 15249/66. Heading C1M. [Also in Division G2] To secure a circular component of an optical objective, such as a lens 3 or 4, in an annular holder 9, the component 3 or 4 and the holder 9 are mounted in nested and substantially coaxial relationship but with maintenance of an annular clearance between the outer periphery of the component 3 or 4 and the inner periphery 7b or 7a of the holder 9 while urging the component 3 or 4 by axial pressure against a coaxial centring ring 10 supported on the holder, the component 3 or 4 is axially withdrawn from the holder by suction to expose the outer periphery, a hardenable cement is applied thereto and the component 3 or 4 reintroduced into the holder, the cement then hardening to secure the outer periphery of the component 3 or 4 to the inner periphery 7b or 7a. As shown, each lens 3, 4 is rotatably mounted, to allow centring, on a chuck 5b, 5a having a shank 2b, 2a carried by shafts 11b, 11a, a spring 14 urging the chuck 5a towards lens 4 which is pressed into contact with centring ring 10 which in turn engages lens 3 on chuck 5b, the centring ring 10 sliding within holder 9. Holder 9 is mounted by a threaded ring 6 in an arm 12 on the main frame 1. In an alternative construction, the holder 9 is screwed into a housing extending out from the chuck 5a. The centring ring may be left in the final optical mount or may be removed before the final insertion of either lens 3 or 4. The cement used is preferably a cold setting type, free from volatile solvents. Suitable resins have a cyanoacrylate base polymer, one example being a copolymer of acrylic-acid ester and acrylonitrile.
