Abstract

1516913 Packing SOC D'OPTIQUE PRECISION ELECTRONIQUE ET MECANIQUE 30 April 1976 [30 April 1975] 17810/76 Heading F2B [Also in Divisions G1 G2 and E2] A lens 5 is mounted in a housing 7 by means of a strip 21 of heat-shrinkable plastics material such as an irradiated polyolefin polymer which has been cut from a sleeve 1 having an initial thickness e 0 and then expanded radially without change in length but with reduction in thickness to e 1 , the strip subsequently being heated, for example by means of infra-red radiation, and allowed to cool whereupon the strip takes on a new shape 20 having its original thickness e 0 . The mounting may also be applied to fitting a flat optical component 32 in a mounting 33, or a metal panel in a metal trough, or a window pane in a metal frame. In a further application,- a ball-and-socket joint comprises a ball 40 mounted in a socket formed by packing 42 initially in the shape of a strip 41. Clamping is improved by grooves 43. Fig. 8 shows a modification in which a glass tube 35 of a spirit level is clamped in its support 36 by mounting members 37.
