Abstract
1,147,669. Vacuum switches; contact materials. INTERNATIONAL NICKEL Ltd. 8 May, 1968 [17 May, 1967], No. 51575/66. Heading H1N. A vacuum switch has contacts 1 of superconductive metal or alloy. The switch is immersed in liquid helium in a vacuum flask 8 to maintain the contacts in the super-conducting state. The contacts 1 may be of niobium or tin or an alloy of niobium with zirconium, titanium or tin. This may be in the form of a capping on a copper, silver or aluminium carrier 2. The envelope 3 of the switch is continuously evacuated by pump 5 and the liquid helium is circulated through a refrigerator 14.
