Abstract

1,147,365. Metal heating furnaces. SELAS CORP. OF AMERICA. 30 June, 1967 [1 Aug., 1966], No. 30411/67. Heading F4B. In a heating furnace 1 metal slabs or billets 2 mounted on supports 3 are heated up to their oxidizing temperature by a stoichiometric fuel-air mixture supplied by a plurality of radiant burners 4, heating being continued thereafter under reducing conditions using a non-stoichiometric mixture having at least a 40% deficiency of air. Each burner includes a refractory block 5, and a combustion chamber 7 supplied with fuel through a pipe 21 from a main conduit 20 and primary air through a connection 12 from a main supply 9. A vent 8 is supplied with air through conduit 18 to aspirate combustion gases from the furnace through the chamber 7, thus preheating the combustion air. Secondary air supply to each burner is via pipe 15. The furnace temperature is measured by a thermocouple 23 which is connected into a circuit incorporating a pneumatic control device 25 to control the supply of burner fuel which in turn controls the supply of primary air via a further control instrument 31. On attaining the temperature at which the metal slabs oxidize, as measured by a thermocouple 34, the air-fuel ratio is changed to produce reducing conditions. Control instrument 36 actuates a valve 38 to supply secondary air to the burners, the primary air supply being simultaneously reduced via control instrument 31.
