Abstract

1,147,300. Ignition systems; sparking plugs. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Dec.21, 1967 [Dec. 30, 1966], No.58006/67. Heading F1B. An internal-combustion engine employs a sparking plug with an electrode fabricated from fine gold or an alloy of fine gold with non gold metallic substances and the electrode includes at least one edge of small radius to increase locally the electrostatic gradient tending to ionize the adjacent air. The ignition system is designed so that the source of high voltage is electrically incapable of generating an electromotive force substantially in excess of that required to ionize the gas between the electrodes under conditions of maximum pressure in the compressed chamber when the plugs are in new condition. Chromium and palladium are examples of two metals which may be alloyed with the gold. In an otherwise conventional sparking plug the final one quarter to one half inch of the centre electrode wire may be made by welding to the (Registered Trade Mark) "Inconel" remainder of the centre wire, a gold wire terminating in a square end.
