Abstract

1,147,219. Astable multivibrators. SIEMENS A.G. 22 July, 1966 [23 July, 1965], No. 33002/66. Heading H3T. In an astable multivibrator a circuit is connected to the output electrodes of two amplifier stages T1, T2 of the multivibrator to derive a control signal which is applied asymmetrically to one input to change the state of one of the amplifier stages if the multivibrator fails to oscillate. As shown, if on starting transistors T1 and T2 both turn on, the network consisting of diodes D1, D2 and resistors R1, R2 allows diode D3 to conduct and connect a negative potential to the base of transistor T1; transistor T1 is turned off and the multivibrator starts, and continues to oscillate due to the normal cross-coupling capacitors C1, C2. When the multivibrator is oscillating the potentials applied to the diodes D1, D2 are such that the diode D3 is reverse biased. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 2, not shown), a transistor (T3) is connected between the resistor R2, point A and the supply +U and is arranged to conduct so as to reverse bias the diode D3 during normal oscillation of the multivibrator.
