Abstract
1,147,201. Coated paper. KURASHIKI RAYON K.K. 5 April, 1966 [5 April, 1965; 6 April, 1965; 8 April, 1965; 29 May, 1965], No. 15030/66. Heading B2E. Paper is rendered water resistant by coating with a coating solution comprising polyvinyl alcohol and clay as a pigment, and then treating the coated paper with an aqueous solution of borax which is said to react with the polymer causing gellation. The polyvinyl alcohol may be completely or partially saponified and the derivative may be a vinyl alcohol-vinyl ether copolymer. The pigment may 'be clay. Oxides, hydroxides and carbonates of metals in Groups II, III, IV of the Periodic Table e.g. calcium carbonate, hydroxide, basic magnesium carbonates, zinc oxide or satin white may be included in the coating solution. Water-soluble alkali metal salts of amphoteric compounds of one or more of aluminium, zinc, tin, lead, titanium e.g. sodium aluminate, zincate, plumbite, stamate and/or water soluble alkali silicates e.g. water glass obtained by the reaction of sodium or potassium oxide with silicon dioxide, may be added to the coating solution, or applied in the form of a solution to the coated paper before or after treatment with borax. A latex such as styrene-butadiene or oxylate copolymer, melamine resin, urea resin, glyoxal resin may be used in the coating solution. The pH of the coating solution may be so controlled as to vary the water-resistance of the coated paper, e.g. by adding an alkaline substance. After drying the products may be supercalendered.
