Abstract
A thixotropic composition comprises an aqueous emulsion of a film-forming polymer or copolymer in admixture with a water-soluble hydroxyl group-containing organic colloid and a minor proportion by weight of a water-soluble alkanolamine aluminate. The aluminate may be the reaction product of a di- or trialkanolamine and an aluminium alkoxide. The colloid may be a cellulose derivative, starch or a polyvinyl alcohol. The composition may also include an alkanolamine titanate. Paints comprising the composition may include titanium dioxide as pigment. In examples triethanolamine and triisopropanolamine aluminates are added to a vinyl acetate/ethylhexyl acrylate copolymer emulsion containing hydroxyethyl cellulose. In a comparative example triethanolamine titanate is added. Mixtures of aluminates and titanates may be used. In Example 6 a paint comprising titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, china clay, aqueous sodium hexametaphosphate, hydroxyethyl cellulose, polyoxyalkene solution, water, 2-butoxyethyl acetate, vinyl acetate/2-ethylhexyl acrylate copolymer emulsion, and triethanolamine aluminate is made.ALSO:Alkanolamine aluminates are prepared by reacting alkanolamines with aluminium alkoxides. In Examples 1-4 triethanolamine is reacted with aluminium isopropoxide to give triethanolamine aluminate, N(CH2CH2O)3Al. In Example 5 triisopropanolamine is reacted with aluminium isopropoxide to give triisopropanolamine aluminate. Other specified alkanolamines are diethanolamine and diisopropanolamine.
