Abstract
1,146,987. Sulphonated polyisobutyl toluene. COSDEN OIL & CHEMICAL CO. 16 March, 1966 [16 March, 1965], No. 11564/66. Heading C2C. [Also in Divisions C4 and C5] Mixtures of polyisobutylated aromatic hydrocarbons having an average M.W. of at least 343 (see Division C5) may be sulphonated, nitrated or halogenated in unsubstituted aromatic ring positions. Sulphonation may be effected with 80-100% sulphuric acid, SO 3 or a mixture of sulphuric acid and SO 3 , followed by neutralization with an oxide or salt of Ba, Ca, Mg, Sr, Pb, Zn, Al or Mn. In Example 1, an alkylate of average M.W. 464 comprising predominantly di-(polyisobutyl) toluene is sulphonated with 20% oleum, and the product neutralized with caustic soda.
