Abstract

1,146,727. Incinerators. ALLIED METALS Ltd. 13 Nov., 1967 [7 Sept., 1966], No. 40068/66. Heading F4W. An incinerator comprises a refractory outer casing 1, an aluminium coated steel sheet inner casing 2, an electrically heated combustion basket suspended in the inner casing 2, an outwardly opening hopper 10, a safety shield (22, Fig. 2) co-operating with the hopper, and mechanism for opening and closing the hopper and automatically actuating the safety shield. The mechanism 11 includes a foot pedal 12 carried by a first arm 13 pivotably connected by a link 16 to one limb of a cranked arm 18, the other limb of which is pivotably connected to the hopper 10. A finger 20 located at the end of the one limb co-operates with an arm 21 for actuating the shield, which finger 20 can pivot in one direction but not in the reverse direction about the longitudinal axis of the one limb that carries it. When the incinerator is not in use the shield is in the vertical closed position, and to open the hopper it is necessary to depress the pedal 12 which causes the finger 20 to move and pivot past the arm 21 leaving the shield in the closed position with pins (23) on the hopper preventing the shield being moved. Upon release of the pedal, the hopper closes and since the finger 20 is not free to pivot in the direction necessary to clear the arm 21 it causes the said arm to pivot clockwise so that the safety shield swings inwardly and the materials placed in the hopper can thus fall into the combustion basket. Towards the end of the closing movement of the loading hopper 10 the finger 20 moves clear of the arm 21 so that as the hopper 10 finally closes, the shield returns to the position in which it closes the aperture. Operation of the mechanism 11 is also arranged to operate a trip lever 25 of a clock switching mechanism of the incinerator to cause the heating elements in the combustion chamber to be energized for a predetermined time.
