Abstract
1,146,605. Stator coating; coating apparatus. EMERSON ELECTRIC CO. 1 April, 1966, No. 14675/66. Headings B2H and B2L. An apparatus for coating the axially extending walls of teeth defining radially inwardly opening slots 201 of a stator 200, with a sinterable material, comprises a masking case 80 having a lower masking tool assembly including an outer masking ring 88, an open topped tank 50 containing a fluidised bed of said material in powder form, said tank being positioned below said masking case for relative vertical movement with respect thereto, on at least one relative position of which at least a part of the masking case is within the fluidised bed, a stator supporting post 130 mounted for movement relative to said masking case from a position clear of said masking case to a position at which a free end of said post extends within said masking case; splines on said post adapted to extend slideably within the gaps between said teeth of said stator, an upper masking ring 123 fixably mounted with respect to said post, said upper masking ring and said outer masking ring serving to clamp between them a stator mounted on said post when said post is in the position in which it projects within said masking case, and power means connected to move said post and upper masking ring relative to said masking case. The specified coating materials are epoxy resins, cellulose esters, polyethylene, vinyl resins, nylon and chlorinated polyethers. In using the apparatus, the stator core is heated, the splines of the masking post are inserted within the slots of the core, gas is forced under pressure along and past the side walls of the splines, introducing a .sinterable material in the form of particles in a gas medium into the winding receiving area of the slots, maintaining the temperature of the masking post below the sintering temperature of the coating material, thereafter stopping the introduction of coating material to the slots, depositing the coating material on the unmasked area of the winding receiving area of the slots of the core, removing excess coating material and stopping the flow of masking gas.
