Abstract

1,146,363. Producing chromium-steels. CRUCIBLE STEEL CO. OF AMERICA. March 22, 1967 (April 26, 1966], No.13381/67. Heading C7D. Stainless steel containing Cr 11-30%, Ni 0-20% and C up to 0À2% is produced by (a) providing a blast-furnace or cupola-furnace produced liquid ferrous metal containing Cr 11-16%, (b) stirring and heating this metal to at least 1446‹C, and if necessary admixing up to 50% of a cooler, Cr-free metal, to produce a metal containing Cr 8-16%, Si 1-5%, C 3À5- 6%, Fe and impurities, balance, (c) blowing this metal in a top-blown oxygen converter, and (d) adding alloying components during and after blowing. As described, several casts of metal are mixed and heated in a channel furnace, transferred to a converter and there blown with additions of scrap interspersed. The slag in the converter is poured off to recover chromium values which are returned to the metal in the converter.
