Abstract
1,146,202. Epoxidation. ATLANTIC RICHFIELD CO. 29 March, 1966 [1 July, 1965], No. 13945/66. Addition to 1,137,241. Heading C2C. Epoxides are prepared by reacting an olefinic compound with t-butyl hydroperoxide in the liquid phase at 50‹-200‹ in the presence of a catalyst in which the active component is molybdenum which is added to the reaction mixture as metallic molybdenum, the molybdenum metal surface area per g. hydroperoxide being 1-20 sq. cm. The preferred metal surface area is 3-15 sq. cm. per g. hydroperoxide. The molybdenum may be in the form of powder, foil, sheet or large masses and may form the lining of the reaction vessel. Specified olefinic compounds include mono- and polyolefins and unsaturated acids, the esters thereof, alcohols and monoglycerides. The reaction may be effected in the presence of a solvent. Examples relate to the preparation of propylene and octene-1 epoxides.
