Abstract
1,145,955. Gravity switches. LONDON BANKSIDE PRODUCTS Ltd. 20 Feb., 1968 [22 Feb., 1967], No. 8471/67. Heading H1N. In a switch actuated by tilting, the actuating member is independent of the contacts so that contact pressure is unaffected by the angle of tilt. A ball 4 is free to roll in a closed tubular member 3 pivoted on a projection 2 on the base 1, so that the member 3 is unstable except in its two limiting positions where it abuts against stops 5, 6. Thus, when the base 1 is tilted, the member 3 will, at a certain point in the movement, turn rapidly to its alternative stable position. The spindle, to which it is fixed, has a flat 12 across it, adjacent to a spring blade 7, so that when the member 3 turns to abut the stop 6, the blade 7 is lowered to allow contacts 9, 10 to close. The pivot of the member 3 is slightly to the right of the mid-point, as seen in the figure, so that when returning to the position shown, the ball 4 has a greater moment to enable it to overcome the downward thrust of the spring 7.
