Abstract
1,145,902. Producing combustible gas from petroleum hydrocarbons. HEINRICH KOPPERS G.m.b.H. 7 April, 1966 [8 May, 1965], No. 15515/66. Heading C5E. A combustible gas is produced by reacting the vapours of petroleum hydrocarbons boiling between 30‹ and 250‹ C. with steam at pressures up to 50 atm. in the presence of a Ni-catalyst in externally heated tubes, the temperature of the catalyst rising continuously from between 280‹ and 330‹ C. at the inlet end of the tubes to between 600‹ and 850‹ C. at the outlet end thereof. The gross calorific value of the gas produced is between 3000 and 5500 k.cal./mm.<SP>3</SP> For a low calorific value gas within this range, the temperature at the inlet and outlet ends of the catalyst tubes is at or near the minimum and maximum of the respective ranges and for a high calorific value gas the corresponding temperatures are at or near the maximum and minimum of the respective ranges. The increase in temperature along the catalyst tubes is preferably, but not necessarily, linear. In the case of producing a low calorific value gas, more heat is supplied to the last two-thirds of the tubes than is supplied to the first-third and a variable length of the tubes in the first-third of their length may be shielded from the heating effect of burners employed to heat the tubes.
