Abstract
In an apparatus for making a combustible gas from fuel oil, a light petroleum distillate or a liquified petroleum gas by partial combustion of the feedstock in a generator, the product gas is passed in turn through a cyclone separator (for removal of free carbon), a heat exchanger (for heating steam and air) and a scrubber-cooler. The free carbon is returned to the generator, and the heated steam and air are delivered together tangentially to the generator with the feedstock, which is atomized (see Fig. 2, not shown). The generator has an annular jacket horizontally sub-divided into separate annular chambers, each chamber communicating with the inner chamber of the generator by a plurality of tangentially arranged ports (see Fig. 3, not shown), which are disposed into elevation to follow the helical flow of gas down the inner wall of the generator, regulated amounts of further air and steam being delivered to the generator via the annular chambers and the ports.
