Abstract
A tubulous fluid heating furnace comprising a radiant section heated by downwardly directed burners arranged in the crown and the side walls, and a convection section below a partition having passages for the combustion gases, the vertical tubes in the radiant section being connected to tubes in the convection section, and waste gases flowing out of the lower part of the convection section. Flat flame burners 4, 11, 12 in the roof and walls of the furnace heat vertical tube banks 8 by radiation, and the gases flow through passages 14 below a heat insulating and reflecting plate 6 to a convection section 18 where hydrocarbons to be pyrolysed in the radiant section are preheated. An auxiliary convection heated tube bank 19 heats water used to cool the issuing gaseous products at 24. The waste gases leave through an outlet 21. In a furnace in which naphtha is pyrolysed to obtain ethylene, the other gases produced are used to fire the burners together with heavy oil.
