Abstract

1,145,800. Screw extrusion machines. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 9 June, 1967, No. 26646/67. Heading B5A. [Also in Division B1] A screw 21 in an extrusion cyclinder 11 comprises a hollow cylindrical cavity 26 divided into heat exchange zones by a plug 33 which selectively engages and disengages a wall of the cavity to vary the respective sizes of the zones as required. Each zone 28, 29 is served by inlet and outlet conduits, those for the second zone 29 being coaxially disposed within those for the first zone 28. The plug 33 comprises a fixed part 34 attached to the outlet conduit 31 of the second zone, an expansible sealing ring 38 and a part 36 screwingly engaged on the conduit 31. In operation, to adjust the position of the plug, a packing assembly 50 is loosened and a conduit 42 is moved inwardly until a cam 44 thereon engages a rotating element 40 on the part 36 when the part 36 is rotated until the ring 38 is freed from the wall of the cavity and the plug is free to slide. The conduit 31 is then adjusted to a desired position and the conduit 42 is slid to engage elements 44 and 40 to rotate the part 36 and nip the ring 38 between surfaces 35, 37 when it is expanded and sealingly engages the wall once more. In a modification, Fig. 2-4 (not shown), the plug comprises a conduit (66) with an externally threaded end (67) to which is attached a shoulder part (68) and a cam part (69) which locates with a part (75) an expansible ring (71). A frusto-conical surface (76) on the part (75) engages arms (79) of a cavity engaging member (78). In operation, the conduit (66) is positioned in the screw internal cavity and a second conduit is placed therearound and engages in grooves (80) of the member (78). Rotation of conduit (66) causes arms (79) to ride up surface (78) and engage the cavity, which is then engaged by the sealing ring on continued rotation.
