A hoist cable cutter comprises a body through which the cable passes, a cutter movable between a retracted position and a shot position, to which it moves from the retracted position across the path of the cable through the body, to cut the cable, means for holding the cutter in its retracted position and a mechanical trigger mechanism for fixing an explosive charge within the housing to force the cutter from its retracted to its shot position. Fig. 2 shows the cable 11 passing through the body 14 which has an anvil 17, a piston 16 with a sharp cutting edge and a breech block 18 to receive a 22 rim-fire cartridge 19. A spring loaded firing pin 20 is held in the cocked position by a first bell crank 22 which engages a sear on a second bell crank 23. A torsion spring 24 biases the bell crank 23 clockwise (Fig. 4) and also bears on a lever 25, the spring 24 being mounted at the lever pivot. A third bell crank 26 which prevents rotation of the lever 26 is connected to the armature of a solenoid 27, controlled by a switch 29. A safety pin 31 prevents rotation of the crank 26 until a second solenoid 32 withdraws the pin. The piston 16 is normally held against movement by a shear pin 21 passing through the piston and body.
