Abstract
1285986 Shearing ETCO Inc 27 Oct 1969 52600/69 Heading B3W An explosively-operated cable cutter comprises a blade housing 14, which has a cablereceiving recess 46a, a fixed blade 48 and a movable blade 35 and is screwed to a piston housing 13, a firing mechanism 12 pivoted to the piston housing, a piston grip 11 and trigger 18. The blades are bevelled away from their cutting edges 35a, 48a at 35b, 48b and have thickened portions 35d, 48d. A buffer spring 39 between a freely-sliding collar 37 and a coupling 41 joining the piston housing to the blade housing returns the piston after a cutting stroke. To cock the blade 35, a handle 55 (Fig. 5) is pulled rearwards, a tongue 57 entering a slot 58 in the blade housing 14 and engaging a shoulder 35e on the blade 35 to move it to its rearmost position. The handle is returned by spring 60. The trigger 18 is biased by a spring 21 so that a sear 18a engages a shoulder 23 on a plunger 24 when the plunger is pulled rearwardly by means of a knob 29. When the trigger is pulled a spring urges the plunger forward, a firing pin 27 striking a cartridge (not shown) in chamber 50 and forcing the piston rod 34 and blade 35 forwardly. Gases from the explosion are exhausted through a chamber (43), Fig. 1 (not shown). A member 30 straddling the portion 17 of the handle prevents rotation of the knob 29 and a bar 66 prevents inadvertent release of the plunger 24. A shield 67 and guards 68 and 69 are provided. Pivoting of the firing mechanism 12 away from the piston housing (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) causes partial ejection of the spent cartridge.
