Abstract

1,145,421. Measuring flame intensity electrically. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Feb.28, 1968 [March 6, 1967, No.10481/67. Heading G1N. The intensity of a flame is calculated from measurements of the rise in temperature and rate of flow of a fluid passing through a conduit held in the flame. As shown, water is forced at high velocity through a spiral conduit 16, Fig. 2, of heat-resistant material, e. g. stainless steel, held in the flame. Two junctions 28, 30 of thermocouple 27, 29 are arranged at the inlet and outlet of the spiral and are connected in series with a meter 32. The rate of flow is measured by meter 33, connected to indicator 34, at the water outlet. Water flows to and from the spiral conduit by conduits 14, 18 surrounded by a water-cooled jacket 23 closed at the end adjacent the flame by an aluminous cement plug 26. A further hot junction 36 of a thermocouple 35, housed in a tube 22 also encased by the jacket 23, is provided at the centre of the spiral to sense the mean temperature of the flame, indicated on meter 41, whereby the calculations from the readings on meters 32, 34 may be checked. The intensity of H of the flame is calculated from the formula H = K(T 2 -T 1 )F where K is a constant, F is the rate of flow of water and (T 2 -T 1 ) the temperature difference sensed by thermocouple 27,29.
