Abstract

To determine the specific heat of a flowing fluid, the fluid is passed through a tube 1 at the ends of which are mounted the thermoelectric junctions of a differential thermocouple 5 the output of which is indicated or recorded at 7. The tube is heated, as by a coil 8 surrounding it, and the specific heat determined by calculation from the heat input (metered at 15 in terms of the power supplied to the heating coil), the (presumed known) rate of flow, and the thermocouple indication of the temperature difference between the inlet and outlet ends of the tube. To identify the mean temperature at which the specific heat has been determined, a single junction thermocouple 4 is attached to the inlet elbow 2 and its output metered separately. The tube is surrounded by thermal insulation 9 and situated within an evacuated housing 11.
