Abstract
1,072,514. Thermo electric devices. H. F. POPPENDIEK and N. D. GREENE. Aug. 11, 1964 [Aug. 19, 1963; March 9, 1964], No. 32718/64. Heading H1K. .[Also in Division G1] Apparatus for measuring the rate of flow of a fluid through a conduit comprises a series of thermocouples wrapped round a length of the conduit and associated with a local heater, whereby the hot junction temperature is dependent on the heat transferred by the flowing fluid. The thermocouples are made from a constantan wire 10 (Fig. 1), coated with silver or copper 12 at regular intervals e.g. by plating, the ends 14, 16 constituting the hot and cold junctions. This thermopile is bent in zig-zag form and helically wound on the conduit 28 (Fig. 4) carrying the fluid. Alternatively the conduit 80 (Figs. 15, 16) is coated by vapour deposition or plasma spraying with the two thermocouple elements A, B, one on each half of the circumference, and a spiral groove 84 cut along the surface to produce a series of junctions 85 between the strips of elements A, B.
