Abstract
1,144,943. Milling; stamping; making studs. DZUS FASTENER EUROPE Ltd. 11 July, 1967 [13 June, 1966], No. 26174/66. Headings B3A, B3B, B3K and B3Q. A machine for applying an identifying mark and a screwdriver slot to the head of a stud comprises a circular carrier 5 having a spaced series of stud holders 6 the carrier being rotatable stepwise to bring the studs successively to a press station 8 for stamping the mark on the head and then into engagement with a milling cutter 25 for cutting the slot before passing to means for ejecting the studs from the carrier. Studs are fed down an inclined feed tube 13 and released and inserted singly into the spring collet stud holders 6 by means of an inserter comprising inner and outer tube members 15, 14 and a pivoted pawl 22 reciprocated by a fluid pressure ram 18. The identification mark is applied by means of a reciprocable stamping die 23 operated by an air hydraulic intensifier 24. The milling cutter is mounted on a pivoted frame 30 and driven by a belt drive 28 from a motor 29 the frame 30 being rocked continuously by a pneumatic ram 32 between limit switches adapted to reverse the direction of stroke of the ram 32. A dashpot-type damper having a projecting rod 37 controls the speed of movement of the frame 30 and therefore of the feed of the milling cutter when the latter is actually cutting the slot in the stud. The studs are ejected from the holders 6 either by a blast of air at position 10 or failing that by a reciprocating claw 42. The shaft on which the carrier 5 is mounted is formed with twelve ratchet teeth adapted to be engaged by a spring-loaded pawl which is moved to rotate the carrier stepwise in dependence upon the vertical reciprocation of the stamping die. A spring-loaded latch engages spaced notches on the periphery of a flange of the carrier to index the carrier accurately. A safety switch operated by this latch prevents stamping, milling or insertion of a fresh stud except when the carrier is thus indexed.
