Abstract

1,144,844. Laminates. PYRENE CO. Ltd. (Hooker Chemical Corp.). 3 Aug., 1967, No. 35646/67. Heading B5N. [Also in Divisions B2 and C7] A surface consisting of iron, zinc or aluminium is treated with an aqueous solution containing chromic acid and phosphoric acid, the water content of the coating is adjusted to 4-20% of the dry weight of the coating and the water-containing coating is then covered with an organic film-forming material which seals the surface and forms an adhesive for the lamination of vinyl resin, polyethylene, and polyvinyl fluoride films. The aqueous coating solution may also contain inorganic fillers, e.g. titanium dioxide, colloidal silica, clay, aluminium and zinc metal, and metal salts of organic fatty acids such as zinc stearate, lead and sodium acetate, and may be applied by roller coating, spraying, flowing or immersion. The adjustment of the water content may be effected by removal of the water by drying, or by adding water by contacting it with moist air or steam. The organic filmforming material may be applied by spraying, roller coating and brushing and may be vinyl, alkyd, acrylic, epoxy, urethane resins which may be pigmented in the form of paints, lacquers, enamels. Surfaces of aluminium, aluminium alloys, zinc and zinc alloys and ferrous metal surfaces such as iron and steel may be treated. The process is particularly applicable to the coating of metal strip at high line speeds.
