Abstract
1,143,272. Microwave heating apparatus. CRYODRY CORP. 19 April, 1966, No. 17081/66. Heading F4B. [Also in Divisions A2 and H5] Apparatus for heat treating substances under pressure by microwave energy comprises a body of liquid through which the work is passed to a heating chamber under hydrostatic pressure and a second body of liquid through which the work is withdrawn. Plastic packs of food in a long strip are preheated by the oil in an entry passage 12 before passing to the oil-filled microwave heating chamber 13. The work is first cooled in an oil-filled exit passage 14 before passing through an air lock 22 to a water-filled exit passage 16 where it is further cooled. The temperature of the liquids at the exit ends of the passages 12, 13, 14 and 16 are controlled by recirculation through heater/coolers 37, 31, 46 and 53 and heat exchangers 39, 41. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), an air lock in a water-filled passage forms the heating chamber, a metal plate below the work preventing the dissipation of the microwave energy in the water below the work. The apparatus may be used to produce foamed plastics by heating plastic particles mixed with a foaming agent.
