1,143,247. Halogenated carboxylic acids and their esters. STUDIENGESELLSCHAFT KOHLE m.b.H. 15 July, 1966 [6 Aug., 1965], No. 31963/66. Heading C2C. Halogenated carboxylic acids are prepared by reacting cycloalkenyl halides, or olefins with secondarily bound halogen or olefins containing at least 4 carbon atoms and primarily bound halogen with carbon monoxide and water in the presence of catalysts that are suitable for Kock's carboxylic acid synthesis. Specified catalysts are sulphuric acid, mixtures of sulphuric acid and boron fluoride and of phosphoric acid and boron fluoride, hydrofluoric acid alone or mixed with boron fluoride, boron fluoride monohydrate, boron fluoride dihydrate, boron fluoride alkanolates, and mixtures of boron fluoride hydrate and boron fluoride methanolate. When the catalyst used is a boron fluoride alkanolate, the carboxylic acid formed is converted in situ to the corresponding alkyl ester.
