Abstract
1,142,971. Rectifying. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 30 Jan., 1968 [3 Feb. 1967], No. 5454/67. Heading H2F. Rectifying apparatus comprises a transformer 10 having two antiphase windings 11, 12 supplying respective bridges 13, 14 of rectifiers having reactors 15, 16 common to both bridges and a D.C. load (such as a traction motor 17) connected as shown. Each reactor 15, 16 passes uni-directional current from windings 11, 12 alternately and functions to smooth the rectified current and to reduce excess current caused by a fault in any bridge arm. The rectified current may be controlled by variation of the conduction angle of the two thyristors T1 . . . T4 connected in each bridge. Alternatively diode bridges may be employed with tap-changing transformers. Each bridge arm may comprise a series/parallel arrangement of rectifiers. D.C. current transformers 18, 19, 20 are included so that a circuit breaker (not shown) can be tripped to isolate one of the bridges 13, 14 in the event of unbalance between the two reactor currents. The effect of the diodes D1 . . . D4 and reactors 15, 16 on the commutation of thyristors T1 . . . T4 is described.
