Abstract

1,142,963. Shearing. POLYTYPE A.G. 1 March, 1966 [10 March, 1965], No. 9029/66. Heading B3W. A device for trimming to length a tube 8, which is shown in the drawings as a collapsible tube, comprises a mandrel 1 on to which the tube is pushed, and associated with which are two inclined cutters 6, so that as the tube engages the cutters the part which will subsequently be cut-off is expanded and split by the cutters so that it rotates with the mandrel during the trimming operation. Each of the inclined cutters 6 is attached to a rocker arm 2, 3, the rocker arms being pivotally mounted at 4 on pins which are carried by a mounting ring 5 which is clamped to the mandrel 1. The ends of the rocker arms remote from the cutters engage the inside of a ring 11 which is supported from the ring 5 by resilient pins 12 and is held concentric with the mandrel by deformable spacing blocks, made, for example of polyvinylchloride. A roller 14 engages the outside of the ring 11 so that as the assembly of the mandrel 1 and the two rings 5 and 11 is rotated the ring 11 is displaced and the cutters 6 are lifted in turn. The tube 8 is held on to the cutters 6 by springs 7. The cutters 6 may have a thread formed on their edges so that the tube 8 is screwed on to the mandrel during the trimming operation. The trimming operation is carried out by a cutter unit which comprises a sharp-edged backing plate 33, Fig. 9, which is rotatably mounted at an angle to the axis of the tube, a stationary cutting tool (37) and a polishing disc 38. The backing plate 33 engages the tube and is rotated thereby, the engagement pressure being sufficient to cause the plate to indent and fracture the tube, so that the cutting tool 37 merely trims the cut end. The polishing disc 38 is fixed and is therefore heated by friction when it engages the tube. This heating is stated to improve its action. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the end of the tube is pushed over a pair of cutters (20) attached to the mandrel (16) and is sheared by the cooperation of these cutters with a further pair of cutters (25) mounted in a ring which is concentric with and axially slidable on the mandrel.
