Abstract

1,142,831. Hearing aids. BERNATONE Ltd. 11 Sept., 1967 [3 Oct., 1966], No. 44100/66. Heading H4J. An in-the-ear hearing aid has a cavity through which sounds from the earphone to the acoustic meatus of the wearer are passed. The cavity provides an acoustic loading for the earphone reducing distortion and allowing increased gain. As shown the aid is enclosed in a shell 10 conforming to the general shape of the external ear. The shell has a microphone cavity 16, a battery cavity 14, and a cavity 18, 20, 22 for receiving the amplifier volume control and earphone. The output of the earphone is coupled to the meatus of the wearer through apertures 28 and 30 via a cavity 26. This cavity which has a volume of about 0À25 c.c. provides the acoustic loading. Filtering material e.g. foamed plastic or cotton wool may be introduced in the cavity. The aperture 30 is threaded to receive a thimble shaped tip (32, Fig. 2, not shown) which extends into the meatus of the wearer and is of a diameter such as to provide a good acoustic seal in the meatus and prevent feedback. The tip may be removed and either cleaned or thrown away if the aperture through it becomes blocked with wax. The filter material prevents wax reaching the earphone.
