Abstract
1,142,612. Cable insulation. PIRELLI GENERAL CABLE WORKS Ltd. 9 March, 1966 [26 April, 1965], No. 17478/65. Heading H1A. To locate areas of overheating in a cable there is provided throughout the length of the cable a coaxial pair system which includes an insulating spacing medium which is in a first non- gaseous phase at normal cable temperatures and is in a second gaseous phase at higher abnormal cable temperatures, at which higher abnormal temperatures a significant change in the permittivity of the insulating medium is exhibited. The hot spot in the cable where this change in permittivity has occurred may be located by high frequency pulse fault locating techniques. In an example given the insulating medium is carbon tetrachloride which boils at 77‹ C. and exhibits considerable change in permittivity due to the transition from liquid to vapour phase.
