Abstract

1,142,579. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. ROBERTS CONSOLIDATED INDUSTRIES Inc. 6 March, 1967, No. 10527/67. Heading B5K. A device for seaming two carpet pieces 22, 24 together comprises a thin metal strip 10 formed of a plurality of parallel sections 12 joined together by flexible straps 14 located adjacent opposite longitudinal margins of the strip 10 with the sections 12 being provided with a plurality of prongs 18. In one embodiment, Figs. 1 and 4, the straps 14 take the form of loops 16 which are extensible so that adjacent sections 12 may be moved independently of each other. Preferably, the straps 14 are recessed inwardly as shown at the right of Fig. 4. The prongs 18 are formed or stamped out of the metal of the strip 10 and the prongs 18 on the opposite sides of the longitudinal axis 20 of the device are formed with their axes tilted 5-20 degrees, preferably approximately 10 degrees, from the vertical generally towards this axis. The outermost prongs 25 although tilted as the others slightly towards the axis 20, squarely face this axis and the other prongs 18 are alternately disposed in opposite directions and at an angle of up to approximately 45 degrees to the axis 20. In a modification (not shown), all of the prongs 18 squarely face the axis 20. Every second and third section 12 is provided with a notch 26 to aid in the location of the device during laying of the carpet. Prior to joining the carpet pieces 22, 24, the edges thereof are sealed with a fast-drying latex-type material to prevent fraying. After being pressed down manually on to the prongs 18, the pieces 22, 24 are pounded with a hammer to bend the prongs downwardly. Due to the inclination of the prongs 18, they bend towards the seam and force the pieces 22, 24 more tightly together. The device may be used as a reinforcement for a sewn seam. Since the device is extensible, the carpet may be stretched after seaming. In another embodiment, Fig. 6, the connecting straps take the form of crimped wires 29 which are spot welded to narrow sections 27 formed of spring steel. Prongs 30 are formed at the edge of each section after first punching small round holes 31 in the material to eliminate metal tearing at the base of the laterformed prongs 30. The outer ends of the prongs 30 are turned over slightly, Fig. 7 (not shown).
