Abstract

1,142,515. Feeding webs. SOUTHERN INSTRUMENTS Ltd. 19 Oct., 1967 [3 Nov., 1966], No. 49378/66. Heading B6B. [Also in Division G1] A device for dispensing paper from a roll of such material comprises a roller 1 mounted for rotation inside a loose roll of paper and for rotating the roll when it is tightened on to the roller as a result of a pull on the paper, the roller tending subsequently to loosen the tightened roll and collars 10 for applying a frictional drag to the inner end of the paper therby tending to retighten the roll on the roller as a result of the pull on the paper. Sleeves 4 having toothed flanges 5 are freely mounted on a shaft 2 to which the roller is fixed. The sleeves are coupled for rotation in unison by gear wheels 6. Initially a length of paper is loosely wound on the stationary roller 1 by inserting the leading edge of the paper under clips 9 and rotating the sleeves 4. A pin 8 is then inserted in aligned holes in a frame 3 and one of the flanges 5 to prevent rotation of the sleeves and the roller is rotated until its attains a speed approximately equal to the speed at which the paper is to be dispensed. The pull on the paper is then supplied by a pair of spring loaded pinch rollers (not shown), causing the paper to be tightened on the roller and the inner end of the paper to be withdrawn from the clips. The rotating roller, however, tends to loosen the roll of paper but the collars 10 which are made of polyurethane foam cause the roll to be retightened. The device enables the paper to be unrolled at a high speed.
